| While the exact origins of crochet are unknown and can only be traced back to approx the 15th century, what is known is that it was once called poor man's lace. About the mid 1800's, it was considered a leisure craft and a textile commodity. However, many of the same stitches developed back then are still in use today. It is believed that the first crochet was done with fingers, rather than the convenient hooks we use currently. Eventually, elaborately embellished hooks were created which often sported beautiful carving and were made of bone or ivory. Even the name 'crochet' is taken from the French word 'hook'. Today, we are blessed with wonderful choices in color and thread as well as some of the amazing patterns you see on this page. |
